Pass Plus is an established training course aimed at new drivers. It was designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry. Pass Plus builds on your skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, to help you become a more confident driver. You can take a Pass Plus course at any time, but it’s mainly aimed at new drivers in the first year after passing their test. Pass Plus consists of 6 modules about driving in different conditions:
Pass Plus Pupil’s Guide
At the start of your course, instructor will give you a copy of the ‘Pass Plus Pupil’s Guide’. This contains detailed information about all aspects of Pass Plus.
Each module will last at least 1 hour, though it can take longer if we think it necessary.
The training sessions
Pass Plus is a practical course and all modules will be practical sessions. However, local conditions and time of year may mean that some modules need to be given as a theory session. Generally at least five and a half out of six hours will be spent in the car. You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed during the modules.
We will complete a training report form that you’ll sign and date when you reach the required standard in each module. To pass the course you’ll need to reach a satisfactory standard in all the course modules. You’ll be given a progress record to help you to keep track of your progress throughout the course.
At the end of your training
On successfully completing your training you’ll be sent your Pass Plus certificate to claim your discount on your car insurance policy.
A group discussion forum (compulsory)
Up to 3 hours with an experienced driver trainer.
In a group of up to 20 young drivers.
The interactive session covers all 6 elements of the Pass Plus Scheme, as listed above, defensive driving issues, as well as looking at driving attitude.
Following the workshop participants will be appropriately paired. Each pair will go on to spend a whole day, or two half-day sessions, taking turns with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) carrying out on-road driver training. This is done as soon as possible after the workshop.
You may be required to pay £20 upon booking or to the ADI at the commencement of your training.
The on road training will cover the Pass Plus modules as well as dealing with other situations as they occur.
You will be treated at all times as a fully qualified driver!
Why should I do it?
As well as reducing your road risk and helping you gain valuable experience and skills, on completion of the course each candidate will be issued with a Certificate of Achievement as well as the Pass Plus Certificate (see note). This will allow you to claim the benefits outlined under the Pass Plus Scheme (details here).
The cost of the whole course is £20 (as of 2015), a massive discount from the normal cost of between £120 and £150. This is made possible by a special road safety grant from the Welsh Assembly Government.
