Driving Tests

The Theory Test

The Theory test is a computer based test, and consists of two parts.

  • The first part is a series of fifty multiple choice questions which you have 57 minutes to answer the questions.
  • You must achieve a pass mark of 43 out of 50.
  • The full official question bank is published by the Driving Standards Agency and available for you to study.
  • The second part is a test of your hazard perception skills.
  • This involves watching fourteen video clips containing fifteen developing hazards in total.
  • Each of these hazards is worth a possible five points each (when you see the hazard you must click the mouse to acknowledge it – the quicker you respond, the more you score).
  • You must score at least 44 out of a maximum of 75 to pass.
  • The skills needed to pass this test will be developed throughout your driving lessons.
  • There are practice and training DVDs available for home study, and these are available from your Driving Instructor.

The Practical Driving Test

The Practical Driving Test involves you driving for around 40 minutes on various road types and conditions.

  • The first part of the test involves the examiner asking you to read a vehicle number plate at a distance of 20 metres (new style plate) or 20.5 metres (old style plate) to check your eyesight.

You will then be asked two vehicle safety questions, one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’.here

Driving Ability

The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. You’ll be examined on your general driving and ability to reverse your vehicle safely. One exercise will be chosen from:

  • reversing around a corner
  • turning in the road
  • reverse parking
  • bay parking
  • You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

Your practical driving test will include approximately ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.

By the end of the test you are permitted to commit no more the 15 driver faults in total, with no serious or dangerous faults, to achieve a pass mark.
